Backlund turns 32 in March. PLD is 22 years old. That is a huge hit age-wise for Columbus, really doesn't make any sense for them.

They'll want someone like Monahan, which I'm fine with. Yes, he looks good to start the season, yes he's a solid scoring center, yes he's put up some impressive stats over the years in Calgary.

You win in the playoffs. From what I've seen over the years Monahan is not the kind of player to lead your team in the playoffs. If you have a chance at PLD with a deal centered around Monahan you do it, especially with him playing well right now. You don't wait until he crashes and burns in the playoffs again.
