We will see how this year plays out but it sure did feel like last year was another one of those smoke and mirrors seasons similar to the Oilers run in 2017. The team last year got a new coach bump which allowed them to get off to a hot start. They had historical special teams and some guys came in and had career seasons.
They added “derpth” but lost their best Dman (which was already their weakest position). They still have 2 of the very best forwards in the game but easily have bottom 5 defense and goaltending and lack the depth upfront their fanboy media thinks they have.
I assume at some point there will be an article that curses the fact they lost the Markstrom sweepstakes to the Flames. I know Staples claimed they dodged a bullet but Spector was all-in with the Oilers signing Markstrom.
Even with a brand new building and the best player in the world someone chooses Calgary over Edmonton. I am not the least bit surprised as it is by far the better city and it isn’t even close.
