Human stupidity was largely forwarded by the Catholic church who decided, in their wisdom (
), that the best way to create and maintain control of the masses was to uneducate them. Basically only clergy were afforded an education, and for everyone else, education was replaced with fear and mythology.
A thousand plus years of that, and western civilization was dumber than a sack of hammers.
