The math that networks are doing now is weighing the benefits that a commentator provides and the risks they present.
Historically - that math made sense when it came to guys like Cherry, JR, and Milbury. They drew viewers and created interest and the actual risks when they said something offensive was minimal.
But that has changed (which is good) such that the risks to the networks when something offensive is said, is no longer worth it, for the relative benefits these guys offer.
I view it as a good thing. The comment was dumb and offensive.
