I agree with this 100%. I listen to the broadest spectrum I can. The critical issue is that understanding what's going on around you isn't just about understanding the facts of an issue, but understanding how different people are perceiving what's going on. You need to understand the many different realities that are generated in different communities if you want to understand how/why events matter and how people are going to respond. Every group buys into their own reality, but it's the interactions between those realities that shape outcomes.
