WW1984 what a mess. Re-watched the first movie before watching this one and the new one feels like it was made by different people.
Spoiler!
The movie has two intros for some reason. I didn't really like the Olympic intro. The kid is too young and the lesson (no shortcuts?) that it brings up has no pay off. Plus it's really long. I enjoyed the mall scene, it was fun and campy. I thought to myself, ok they are going for a different tone this movie, I am on board. Except the rest of the movie isn't like that at all. After watching that movie that scene seems so out of place. It would be an easy scene to cut, but then you don't have WW in the movie for the first hour and 20 minutes...
Which brings me to the next problem. Around an hour into the movie I said to my wife, what is the threat that WW needs to stop? It was clear that the wishing stone / max lord was going to be the villain but nothing had happened yet, there wasn't a threat or a problem to solve. Then the first major action scene in the movie isn't until over an hour and 20 minutes into the movie. Just brutal pacing and boring story telling.
Then there is the wishing stone. Once Lord turns himself into the wishing stone the movie became a muddled mess. It was really unclear what was happening. He was taking stuff from them, but it was also hurting him for some reason but he was lusting for more wishes/more powerful wishes? Then the movie just bites off too much off. There is a wall in Egypt and people can't get water, threat of nuclear war and now the whole world has made wishes. Just too much going on, and not focused. Chris Pine inhabiting another persons body was a super strange decision. Kristen Wiig's character arch took forever considering how simple and bad the pay off was.
I thought the whole ending was just a terrible mess. Especially how Lord just leaves and finds his kid in the bushes. lol. Really felt like a first draft or that a whole bunch things got changed as the movie got made. WW arc was that she could say goodbye to her boyfriend from 40 years ago that she knew for a month? Or that truth is the most important and matters the most above all blah blah.
I didn't really like Kristen Wiigs performance. The whole awkward person comedy is really stale to me. I wasn't really fan of Gal Gadot either, pretty flat performance as well. I thought she was better in the first one. Chris Pine was good, but honestly shouldn't have even been in this movie. Pedro Pascal I didn't really like either, didn't buy his performance.
Can't say I recommend the movie. Certainly don't pay to rent it or pay for an HBO subscription for it.
