To be quite honest, for a very long time, I used to be a single malt purist and a staunch proponent of having Scotch neat only. Lately, more and more often, I find myself enjoying it with an ice cube. I bought a large ice cube maker on Amazon; makes 1.5-inch ice cubes. I use carbonated spring water to make them and they freeze pretty clear. Just have one cube at the bottom of the glass and sip slowly while watching a movie. You can see the flavour swirling around ice; it's fascinating, actually...
As you know, when you go tasting in Scotland they all have water droppers to add. So with 4 on a flight, I always felt it worth experimenting by adding a little water later in the tasting. Some scotches it works for, some it definitely doesn't. I find it tough to compare a cask strength with an 80 proof directly, so find I need to add a touch of water to balance it before comparing flavours.

I play around with ice ocassionaly, but usually just like them as they are made if I'm just sipping on one.

I heavily ice the cheaper Canadian and Irish whiskeys and enjoy the transition as the ice melts.

I bought one of those ice cube trays that does ~2" square or so as well. I call them 454's. Big Block!
