Watched WW84 last night. We have HBO so didn't cost us anything, which is good because it was an absolute dud. This is coming from someone who liked WW. Not just in a "it was good for a DC movie" kind of way. I thought it was an excellent movie and one of my favorites of the genre.

But this one sure seemed to be a weak effort, although no fault of the actors. I thought Gadot, Pine, Wiig and Pascal were all very good. But the problems are immense:

WB had to know they weren't sitting on a winner here. Hard for me to believe that was the script they greenlit for this. It's like it was the only idea they had to get Chris Pine back in the movie which is a shame because the WW character sure deserved much more.

The premise of the monkey's paw is interesting enough, and could have worked had they tried to flesh it out. But instead, the artifact is totally random, no meaningful back story at all. With all the Amazonian history they could have made up, a five minute detour to the story of the artificast would have been well worth it. The movie comes down to convincing people to "renounce their wish"? About the third time the actors recited that piece of dialogue, someone must have realized how corny that was for the resolution of a big tentpole film. It was embarrassing to watch. This is a comic book movie so half of the appeal is seeing the costumes and characters appearance. The Cheetah/WW fight was dark, bad CGI, lame gold costume and no real stakes to it. The Cheetah wasn't much to see. The final denouement was just a bunch of noise and wind. Zero suspense. No WW in the move for about an hour in the middle section. That's a problem, because it's not like much suspense or plot was built either. Juts flat out boring. WB had to know they weren't sitting on a winner here.
