You don’t get to that level without being a thoroughbred. You aren’t taking a voluntary seat to help your team figure out their cap issues. That sounds like a GM problem, not an all stars problem. Especially after winning a cup. Nothing left but personal records.

That’s the player perspective. From the team perspective I don’t get the “we would rather have the player” argument at all:
- you still get the player for the playoffs healed and rested where your season really matters
- you don’t have to lose a good young piece like Cirelli forever
- you aren’t remotely threatened by the teams in your top heavy division. You just won the cup without Stamkos
- you don’t need to commit to losing him for all 56 games right now. This move buys you time at the very least
From Tampa’s perspective losing Kucherov for 56 games that don’t really matter to them is the biggest downside and it’s really not that big of an issue for them
As for the player I don’t think dealing with a nagging injury while still getting paid and not having to deal with COVID travel, only to come back fresh for a cup run sounds all that bad.
Also players don’t just win one cup and then get tunnel vision for personal records as you make it sound. His ultimate goal this year is still another cup. It’s the ultimate prize even if you already have one
