So far, this is business as usual. But now we have people grandstanding about it, and scoring cheap political points by claiming that every! Single! Death! Must be someone's fault. A few people are loudly touting the idea that the only acceptable casualty rate is zero, and a lot of people are quietly going along with it.

But we're not getting to zero.

Put those two things together, and we have a recipe for permanent masks, permanent lockdowns, permanent unemployment, permanent school closures, permanent bans on any and every kind of human interaction between people who live in different households. None of it will ever be enough, because no infectious disease can be eradicated in that way. But as long as public health officials continue to follow that rationale, there will never be any grounds for removing the restrictions. And there will always be people campaigning for more, for a variety of reasons.

Then, when we have people saying things like this—

—it looks to me like the same faulty reasoning is being applied to the flu, and presumably to other viruses. Mask everyone. Lock down everything. Every death by any respiratory virus is someone's fault and must be prevented, no matter how much collateral damage it does. That's the attitude i am seeing in a lot of places.

Things will get much, much worse before they ever become perfect.
