I don't understand this idea. Most people dying from COVID are older, and have more comorbidities, yes. However, it doesn't change the fact that they died because they contracted COVID while having these comorbidities. It's like if someone falls and fractures a hip, and then ultimately dies because they have complications from their comorbidities. Sure, their death isn't completely related to the hip fracture, but how is it not related?
The people I see dying from it in hospital most often do have comorbidities but that doesn't change the fact that contracting COVID has led to them dying. Similarly, all the unfortunate elderly who have passed away in a nursing home outbreak, would you say it isn't COVID related? They all have/had the same comorbidities before this outbreak, would they have all died within days of each other without COVID?
This is not even taking into account all the people who are being affected that DON'T have COVID but are finding it hard to access medical care, or are scared enough of getting COVID that they don't seek medical care soon enough.
The kicker is this however, there are ways to mitigate this. Ways to try and prevent people from contracting and spreading the virus. Ways to try and not inundate our healthcare system. But instead, people point to the numbers and go, "well they didn't technically die of COVID, so who cares?"
If your neighbor tripped on a patch of sidewalk you didn't bother to shovel and maintain, broke a hip and then ultimately died because of their comorbidities, would you look their family in the eye and say, "Well, damn, sorry they broke a hip but it's their own fault for having all these comorbidities, it's got nothing to do with me not cleaning off my sidewalk." It's a rhetorical question, but the one that truly begs asking is if this is not ok, then why is it different for COVID?
