But how did we send 100' of thousands of kids and teenagers into schools for 4 months to mingle about with each other in confined paces and exposing not only themselves but all the employees there to a huge risk (who all then went home to spouses/children/room mates)...but somehow skating with 40 adults outdoors is a far more egregious gathering.

Its a convoluted and arbitrary clusterfata of piece meal laws and rules. Hell...look at the pictures coming out of malls the last couple days.

Mixed messaging all over the place and little surprise people are having issues with it all.
Wow silly take here. After 9 months of this people still don't get it. My anti masker, protect my freedoms sister has the same arguments as you. But the kids go to school what's the difference.

The government is in an impossible position and that is the reason the rules are what they are.

Children going to school is high priority for several reasons. Learning is more effective in class, kids need the socialization, parents if they're so lucky to still have a job need to work and can't have young kids at home all day.

The government needs to choose what is important and what is not and prioritize to protect the most vulnerable and the health care capacity. Alberta has done a crap job at this which is why things are going crazy and even more stringent restrictions needed to be put in place. Imagine if the simple wearing a mask indoors was implemented earlier? The restrictions likely wouldn't have had to be so severe.

As much as I'd love to shelter in place to get through this, some things are necessary risks. Work and our kids going to school are those necessary risks whereas going out with a few friends to a restaurant (in BC) is not necessary so we decline. Our kids don't mingle with anyone outside of their school cohort (cousins, friends across the street etc). We do go on social distance walks for the mental health aspect and as much as getting together with a bunch of people to play hockey (not a socially distant activity) seems wonderful it is not responsible in any way.

Our family is not in a high risk profile for Covid but we're doing our part for the greater good. IMO anti makers should be punished moreso than they are. There also should be vaccine passports once we get rolling towards normal so people can safely attend events, restaurants etc... but I doubt the government has the balls to implement that. If you don't want a vaccine as it's your right to decline that's fine but it's not your right to attend concerts, go to restaurants and put others at risk.
