Marian Hossa had a severe case of eczema brought on by a lifetime of wearing hockey equipment.
Hockey equipment is gross. You can see where some guys might develop severe skin irritation. And when it’s all over your body, how long are you willing to put up with that?
You play through your skin being on fire for a shot at glory.
You don’t play through your skin being on fire to finish 16th and get bounced in the first round.
If Hossa’s skin was fine, he’d have kept playing. His legs still worked. His hands were there. He may not have been Marian Hossa anymore, but he’s still Marian Hossa. If that makes sense.
