One the reasons why this is likely to go forward is the cost of putting grass into the existing Skydome. They went from full turf to grass, to grass infield, to dirt basepaths, and in every step the cost of ripping out the concrete and turf in order to add the necessary filtration system was astronomical.
Considering how hard it is on the body (knees especially) to play on turf, and the rising cost of running a baseball team, Rogers always knew that a change was a-coming. When the cost of revamping the Skydome starts to look like a real dent in the building of an entirely new facility, I'm guessing it became a pretty easy sell.
Man, Skydome has a massive concrete footprint though. I wonder how much of the raw material is reusable in some way.
