I think performance has a lot to do with it. Fans like winning teams and if the Flames were on top of the leagues standings on a regular basis, I would suspect average viewership goes up, which means more ad revenue, which also means money in the bank for network airing the games.

As for your point about the Oilers, yeah they’ve been bad for a while, there’s no doubt about that. But Sportsnet also signed a contract with them, so “dumping” a team isn’t an option regardless of how bad they are as they’re obligated to do so and by not doing so, it would seem like an easy way to be sued.
