I tend to think Janet Hubert was more a victim than an antogonist, at least at first. I also wouldn't put it over over the young, immature star to be young and immature, and use that star power to derail a supporting cast member he didn't get along with, including influencing his other cast members to take his side. Only one of them was the meal ticket.
Hubert was clearly hurt and destroyed, and I felt Smith didn't come off all that great in that segment. It seemed he expected the classic TV reconciliation and was stunned and offput to hear how much he cut Hubert's career and life at the knees. He's pretty lucky that Hubert was clearly there to forgive because it seems like she had that knife in hand for years after pulling it from her back.
And yes, the OG Aunt Viv was the massively better character.
