This is it exactly. It's a symbol of how desperate the organization was back then. It was a truly sad attempt at piggybacking on the dark jersey trend and cartoon/animal logo trend to just beg a generation of children to stop thinking that anything with a Flames logo on it was something to be ashamed of. I guess it's great that it appears to have worked on a lot of kids, but that doesn't change the fact that the horse head logo is a direct product of the complete absence of pride felt for the flaming C in Calgary during the late nineties.
Thankfully the Flames grew out of that phase and learned to have some pride again (thank you Darryl!).
