People like to think that the anti-Trump vote brought people out, but it appears the pro-Trump support was even more effective. When that dries up, and it becomes a policy discussion, what do the Republicans have to stand on? Absolutely nothing. Trumpism will be with us for decades, but without the dear leader, it won't have that sustaining pull to the polls.

I don't know about that. Trump lost states where the GOP won the Senate and/or House. This was a referendum on Trump and he lost but the GOP increased their support across the board. I think the reason the reason for this is two-fold:
1- Generally, Democrats are not speaking effectively to the issues the majority of the country cares about. They focus on climate change, social issues and the economy. But even when they talk about the economy they tend to get into the minutia. Most Americans don't spend much time thinking about politics or listening to politicians and don't care what percentage the top 27% of earners are paying in tax. White working class men, in particular, have been experiencing a decline in their quality of life for decades. It could be argued if it's deserved to bring them back to the mean or even real, but it's real and problematic to many of them. The Democrats often waive it away as 'privilege' while championing the cause of marginalized groups in the country. They are making white working class males feel like a marginalized, ignored group. Blue-collar union workers used to be the foundation of the Democratic voter.
2- Meanwhile, the Republicans are recognizing the angst of white working class males and providing reasons for their failings mostly by giving them enemies to blame for their problems. Mexicans, Muslims, Blacks, women, immigrants in general, LGBTQ, ((globalists)), Deep State and eventually the Democratic Party in general are all to blame.
As long as the Democrats continue to pay lip service or even ignore this group of people, they will continue to struggle to win elections. The Democrats need to give more voice to people like Yang and Sanders in shaping the party platform. There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a young, angry man with nothing to lose.
