Last year Monahan made it a focus to be better away from the puck. It is a work in progress, but he is still a young player improving that side of his game. Probably the instant success he had with Gaudreau may have set him back a bit as they started to cheat towards offence. I think a lot of young players go through that and learn that you need to work at it in all zones. At least Monahan understands that. To say he is what he is at this point, I agree is premature. Yzerman was probably closer to 30 before he evolved his game.
