W was the anti-Clinton. He wasn’t charming, he wasn’t cool, and he seemed like kind of an idiot (although W read 2 books a week during his second term). He couldn’t make money drilling for oil in Texas, he wasn’t great at running a baseball team, and he enjoyed the cocaine once upon a time. Started two wars (one reasonably justifiable) and let the banks run wild and tank the economy. Basically did such a poor job that the American electorate said “#### it, let the black guy try.”

Obama, thoughtful, eloquent, decent, a top-10 orator in the history of western civilization, is
the ultimate expression of America at its best.

Trump is the ultimate expression of America at its worst.

Where Trump is chaotic and immature, Biden is stable as a rock.

Say what you will about either of the last two presidents, you cannot deny that each man is the perfect foil to bring out the worst in the other party.

Joe Biden isn’t that. Joe Biden is a boring, uncontroversial white man man. If Donald Trump is a corrosive, sulphuric acid upon democracy, Joe Biden is some nice household bleach.

Just what the Donald ordered.
There is something to this, but I think you have oversimplified it a bit.

Clinton won because of two things: Bush reneging on his no new taxes pledge and Perot splitting some Republican votes. Clinton being young and hip (compared to Bush) helped, but Bush just seemed completely out of touch with everyday Americans in the middle of an economic slowdown.

Bush won partly due to Clinton fatigue. Too many scandals and what does the word is mean stuff. Plus, Gore was not overly likeable. I disagree with your view that W wasn’t charming. He is, in a frat boy type of way. Someone you would like to have over for a bbq, and people liked that over Gore.

As far as his intellect, I tend to think that he has some learning disabilities that made him seem stupid at times, but I don’t think that he truly is stupid.

I still maintain that Trump won because Hilary was such a toxic candidate for most of the voters and there was (and is still) a large segment that is just disgusted with both parties and the system and feels ignored and so the idea of tearing it all apart appeals to them. That and a bit of racism and sexism too.
