Exactly this.

I think Biden was the safest bet. He may not have been the consensus first choice for a lot of people, but he was probably in the top 3 for the most people. Other candidates had higher boom and bust potential.

This wasn't the year to be going for a wild card. If Trump can do one thing, it's tear people down and ridicule them. It doesn't matter if what he says is truth, just the action causes people to falter. Biden, having been around for so long and seeing it all, was the safest bet to weather that storm.

I personally don't think the high water mark was ever going to be that high for beating Trump and Biden is pretty much meeting my expectations.
