Biden wasn't the most spectacular candidate but he was in retrospect the safest candidate for defeating Trump, and this was the one race that Democrats couldn't afford to lose. I have a hard time saying that any of the other primary candidates would be able to close this out as reliably as Biden and Harris did.
Given that Democrats have underperformed in down-ballot races in every election cycle this decade except 2018 (when they did great in the house but still fell apart in their senate races), I think there's something more problematic that they need to address than who they put at the top of the ticket. Could be those down-ticket candidates. Could be how they organize and outreach at a community level. But they need to fix it for 2022, because if they don't pull out a senate majority there, 2024 is going to be rough for them.
