Canadians do not truly understand American repulsion to the term socialism. They just don't get it. It is an anvil around your neck a puts a target on you. It's ridiculous, but it is the way things are. It's like being a Flames fan and hearing the word Oiler. Last thing you want to be labeled is an Oiler or Oiler fan. Take that, and ramp it up a few thousand degrees. That is socialist/socialism to most Americans.
