I mentioned it before, but a lot of rural and small town/small city people, simply have not been that affected by COVID directly. But they do feel the effects of the restrictions and overall negative economic impacts. For that reason, I can see why Trump's stance on opening up and downplaying the virus would appeal to them.
Trump's campaign really capitalized on the rural/urban divide and COVID was a big part of that.
