This is why that quote about there being a problem with the Americans themselves is the answer to all this. Many are fully not informed when they vote, and are happy to vote based on gut feelings and false rhetoric. Happens all the time.

Apologies if this is an embarrassingly ignorant question but: if I'm a Republican in that district, wouldn't I strategically want to vote for the dead Republican candidate (as opposed to the Democrat candidate) in order to at least force a special election?
