This is about stopping the bleeding. That's it. It's about letting the train wreck come to a rest. Nobody is counting on Biden of all people to snap his fingers and put it back on the tracks. If Biden wins, we can start surveying exactly how much damage has been done and start picking away at it. "Healing" takes time and effort, we're talking years, and possibly a lot of them. And that's if the Democrats sweep and the Republicans moderate during the next election. It's about getting back to the baseline, there is damage done that no Presidential term is equipped to fix.
There is no such thing as miracles, and I really wish people would stop hoping for them.

Yep, this election is about pulling what's left of American democratic institutions out of the fire. This is triage, and if successful the system will still be ailing for a while even if everything starts heading in the right direction.
Even if Biden wins decisively tonight and Trump concedes, there will still be 2&1/2 months with Trump in office, a massive wave of covid, high unemployment, a damaged financial system, more small business closures etc.
The crisis that Obama and Biden went into in 2008 was smaller and less complex than what the US faces now. Things can get better, but there is no overnight recovery ahead no matter what the results are today.
