Default CP Jihad Request - Alberta Residents

Hi All,

I have been a part of a few CP jihads in my time, but I never thought I would have the need for one.

My younger brother Darren is 48 years old. He was born blind, deals with epilepsy, and has severe cognitive disabilities. Years ago my parents (mostly my mom, my dad has never really dealt with this) made the difficult decision to put Darren in a group home because the level of care he requires was beyond their means.

Darren has been in the same group home now for more than 20 years. He has grown accustomed to the care givers and the fellow clients in the home. He "sees" them as family. Unfortunately the provincial government has to make tough decisions and sharpen its pencil, so they are examining whether to close the group homes and move the clients to private care.

We feel this would be a cataclysmic decision that would put Darren's welfare in jeopardy. This isn't the first time this has been tried. Clients of a group home in Red Deer were moved to private institutionalized "care". Some died.

Yesterday my mom and stepfather (bless his soul for doing what my Dad should be doing) were part of the AUPE protest at the legislature. There was a piece on global news about them.

I can't emphasize enough how this issue has tortured my mom. I am proud of her stance and how hard she is fighting for this. If this is something that moves you, then please take a few minutes to sign this petition as an Albertan resident.

Thank you if you have read this far. -- Rod
