I don’t know how US taxes work, but in Canada you can absolutely pay millions of dollars of taxes in advance through instalments. It’s based on your status (individual, corporation, etc.), what your taxes paid over the last three years were, and what your expected tax expenses will be in the next year. If you are a person in Canada that doesn’t have withholdings on your income, such as dividends paid from a corporation, CRA will require you to pay instalments during the year. They don’t just let you wait until April and then pay. Again, I don’t know how it works in the US, but I can’t imagine the system is dramatically different. So, yes, individuals and corporations will absolutely prepay income taxes during the year. Some of them will prepay millions of dollars, but those are obviously not the most common amounts.
