I agree that top musical talent is very subjective. I'm not sure what their approach is for booking the acts but something just doesn't seem right to me. One big issue I have is that the performances, even from great artists, seem overly terrible on SNL. Maybe it is the studio set up, maybe it is the production aspect of it.

It suffers the same issue as talk show studio performances. The studios are so small that they have to quiet everything down for it to sound good live in studio. And while the mixing and mic'ing are top notch, something is really lost to the at home viewer when drums, guitars backing tracks etc. are all quieter. It really takes away from band performances, especially.
They are probably blazing performances in studio though, where the crowd is like 10-30 feet away.
