I think the Flames just sign an another depth defencemen, and let Petrovic and that next defencemen battle it out for the 7th D.

Kylington absolutely needs playing time to develop. I thought he was fairly solid for the most part throughout last season, with the exception of two very bad games in a row. He isn't going to improve by watching from the pressbox and practicing any more.

It really does make the most sense to run:

Giordano - Tanev - shutdown pair against the best lines
Hanifin - Andersson - they were good together, and another season to improve
Valimaki - Kylington - the pair that you shelter, but far from garbage either. They will get better as the season gets closer to playoffs.

I get Treliving wanting to pair Tanev with a younger guy, but when you mix it all up, I think it becomes more difficult to line-match and stay effective. Maybe it will work out - it isn't like I don't see the logic behind it, but I do think running the pairs as above allows for the Flames to be able to line-match more effectively, while also allowing for improvement.

Kylington really needs a push I think. If he doesn't get it this year, then what's the point of keeping him in the organization then? Either play him, or trade him and sign another depth guy. If he fails and continues to fail, switch him with the 7th D for a stretch, let him re-focus, and if it happens again then at least you know he he isn't going to work out here, and you cut bait one way or the other.

For the rest of the line-up, I am good with it (assuming re-signing Mangiapane and Kylington). I assume there will be at least one (if not more) depth signings for the 4th line (like it or not, Reider + Jankowski were part of a decent 4th line and were key components of the Flames' PK). Hopefully the signings come in the way of PK specialists to replace that skill-set. I want Backlund and Lindholm off the PK - not because they aren't effective at it (they are effective!), but I would rather they use their minutes more effectively while they are on, particularly Backlund as he draws the tough assignments, and if he gets too tired, I imagine it gives the opposition a bit of an edge.

Who around the league is available that is cheap, fast and experienced on the PK? That's who I would target, and at least 1 if not 2 of those.
