I know these hypotheticals were meant as argumentative retorts to a different post, but, just as a point of clarification (because I still subscribe to the print Herald edition)...
The Herald article mentioned that she's become a mental health/illness and addictions-awareness advocate in the intervening years. More than likely, her motivation is to educate the public about these issues, so as to hopefully assist others.
It's a special kind of strong required to do this, especially because they (she, the kids) probably also love(d) their Dad to whatever extents, despite his obvious problems. The fact that they've actively decided to inspire positive change from their own extremely negative experience speaks to their remarkable resilience and courage.
