We had more than enough cap to sign Markstrom and have it not be an issue. The team set an amount they were willing to spend and made a decision for no NMCs. Markstrom wanted a bit more, which was probably fine, but the team held steadfast on the NMC. While our cap could be an issue in picking up MAF, I doubt we wanted anything to do with MAF... so... yeah, bit of a non-starter.

Even by your own post, the "expected" goal differential is a projection based on Holtby playing at the same level as he did in previous seasons. It doesn't factor in any changes that are made to his game.

Also, if you ever listened to any Vancouver sports media, you'd know they don't sell team propaganda. They sell making every mole hill into a mountain and make everything a controversy, so if they're even optimistic on this one, it means there wasn't much controversy to sell.
