Last time I checked Ian Clarke doesn’t determine defensive systems or allocate the appropriate individuals to execute said system.
Holtby has played a certain way for his entire professional career in one organization.
Ian Clarke worked with Markstrom for years to ultimately cover the warts of the Canucks defence. Markstrom was highly touted going into Florida, and he deserves some credit for the reclamation of Markstrom’s game. As does Markstrom.
But... there is a lot more going on than a goalie whisperer plugging and playing new personal into their system with a few tweeks.
Will it work? Perhaps.
But a better question is, did Benning et al. even talk to Ian Clarke about what goaltenders are best suited for their current defensive structure and personnel?
They probably did & his answer was probably Markstrom.

I don’t understand why people like to talk about things they don’t know or understand.
Do you live in the Vancouver market? Do you hear all the interviews and stories about the Canucks or Ian Clarke or Markstrom or Tanev?
Yes, Benning and the Canucks did ask Clarke about which free agent goalies are suited for the Canucks system and also who he thinks is a good fit and who he wants to work with. Clarke told them Holtby is who they should target. This was on sports radio in vancouver. They have two sports radio stations covering the Canucks, try listening to them and you will learn a lot about the team and their personnel and how they do things.
Kevin Woodley, a goalie expert was also on, you guessed it, Vancouver sports radio talking about Holtby and specifically about vision testing that was done and Holtby apparently scored off the charts on a peripheral vision indicator which bodes well for his ability to see the puck.
It sounds like the Canucks, Ian Clarke, and third party experts have done some homework on Holtby and are confident that he can return to form hence a pretty big AAV if you ask me. He got more than what I wanted the Flames to offer him if they were to go down that route.
With all the discussion on the Canucks, Markstrom, Tanev, some of you really need to do some research before you spout off in here about our rivals, it makes the rest of us Flames fans look like Oiler fans, ie. ignorant.
