This conversation interested me so I went and looked at when most goalies (that I can recall) became starters in the NHL. Most were 25-26 years old and usually had a good 10-12 years of play. The few exceptions that were younger were really big stars, Roy/Brodeur/Fuhr/Vernon but were few and far between.
What surprised me were even the great ones had a save percentage for their careers of around .910 but it was directly related to early career numbers that were really low. I think this was a good pick up for the Flames, much better than MIKE SMITH in Edmonton
