It's a good risk to take rather than settle on a lower number after a bad year or a multiple year contract.
From an Oilers perspective, the player isn't what they need on D, but this is how they build teams up there.

I get the thinking here but who is the last player to successfully do this in Edmonton. Would not be shocked to see Barrie having to settle for a PTO or signing in Russia next season.
