Oilers discussion aside...
This is a really good deal for Detroit. Greiss is a very good 1A type option to pair with Bernier as a 1B. Money is very affordable, as is the term. Perfect stop-gap option until the Wings are actually ready to compete.
That being said, they will still be the worst team in the league this year by a fair margin. LOTS of work to do for Yzerman to build this team. But he's going to have plenty of wiggle room next year.
As of right now, the Wings only have 1 defenseman signed past this year (DeKeyser), 4 forwards (Larkin, Nielsen, Fabbri, Zadina), and one goalie (Greiss). There are 3 current RFAs that will be signed without any major issue (Bertuzzi, Mantha, Timashov).
That's 7 forwards, most of which are good, but just one defenseman and one goalie who are NHL caliber and experienced.
I can see them being pretty aggressive leading up to the expansion draft to pry players out of situations where they cannot be protected. Getting an asset back for a player you may lose to expansion always seems better than getting nothing. Could be a very interesting year for Detroit. Stay tuned.
