It’s more about the term, age, and trajectory of Tanev.

Arizona is desperate to shed salary - why not try to see if they will give you something to take Hjalmarsson or Demers off their hands?

Tampa is in a tight cap crunch...maybe you can pry a young RFA like Cernak away from them or even try an offer sheet ($4.3M would cost a 2nd and Tampa can’t afford that)

Even just budget options for a guy like Ceci might not be a huge downgrade at this stage of Tanev’s career.

Giving 4 years and $4.5M to a 31 year old injury prone dman that is on a downward trajectory just never seems like a good move.
