For the Aberlour, use the basic rule... that if it doesn't have peat or smoke, add a touch of water or purified ice (small) and see if it alters or opens up the aroma. You might like it more, or you know you can go back to neat. I've had a couple of even high end scotches, that just a touch opened it up like an explosion. Others, I've been too happy with the flavour without, and didn't want to experiment, because I'd rather attach the taste to the experience at the moment.
Frequently this will also help if you do encounter burn, but IMO you shouldn't find burn in any decent liquor, it turns me off of it, like they are trying to hide something. I had no idea that tequila could be so good, until someone gave me a nice one with no burn.
