Depends how you view mistakes.
Brad didn’t sign any middling, coat-tail riding forwards. That’s a start.
He signed a mid-pairing Defensive D who’s been basically the same player at both ends of the rink for four years. The player put up similar numbers to an outgoing Hamonic, and only cost $600k extra.
Defensemen age differently- forward is a young man’s game. Defense is about patience and savvy and positioning.
There was no place to put Neal or Brouwer. There’s a very obvious need for a Tanev type of player on this blue line.
