What bothers me the most is how everyone looks at all the underlying numbers and use that as gospel.
- defensive dmen usually never have great underlying numbers because they get put into the most difficult situations, they are usually out there the last few mins of a game where the other team is pulling their goalie and putting on major pressure to tie it up etc. and are not put into favourable situations like dmen with more offensive capabilities so their numbers take a hit.
- Tanev has been playing on a rebuilding team that is just now starting to find their way so they have been outmatched in a lot of games so of course his numbers look like they have been trending down over the last few years.
We needed a dman who can play top 4 mins, be a factor on the PK and ideally be a RHed shot.
He checks all the boxes, is only 30, signed for less that 5 years and for less than $5mill.
The kicker is he has been widely regarded as having elite defensive abilities.
