Feel like most people were on board with Bishop and Flames had just failed to acquire him two times prior. If I'm not mistaken Flames also offered a similar contract but Bishop didn't want to come here then after that.

I think if anything the talk of Bishop being overrated was either related to not wanting to move the 6th overall pick for him (which is very valid) or everyone consoling themselves after the failed trade at deadline day, and then failing to trade for his rights before he went UFA.

And even then 6 years at $4.9M for Markstrom and I'm okay with that, I worry about it though when the rumors are that it could start to climb to 6 years between $6 & $7M.

And really I don't think Markstrom / Bishop are all that comparable either.

When Bishop went UFA he had been great for 5 seasons prior, had a .921 save percentage over that time, had two Vezina finalists, and 41.6 Goals Saved Above Average.

Markstrom over his last 5 seasons had a .913 save percentage, no Vezina finalists, and 13.5 Goals Saved Above Average. So a bit of a gap in performance over the careers of the two goalies up to them becoming UFA as well.

Markstrom is a good goalie but I'm worried we just witnessed his career season, and would be paying a premium for that.

I will still be excited if the Flames sign him tomorrow since he will still easily be our best Goalie since Kipper, but I do worry that contract might not look very good as soon as the 21-22 season just because of his age and since really he didn't have any type of elite performance and was just average prior to this last season. And I'd still rather they do this than move assets for a 30+ goalie like Kuemper, but IMO it's going to be a very risky contract.
