Trump is incapable of this. He has to know more than the doctors, he has to have the bigger rallies, he has to make the biggest noise. His approval would be in the 60s right now, even if he did nothing.

Yep. Right from the beginning, he and his supporters saw this all as a plot against him and his precious economy. It didn't have to be political, but he made it that way. All it took was more early action, a little more short term pain, and everything could be looking a lot more normal by now, including economic activity. No one would have blamed him for a few months of economic hardship. Instead, there is no obvious path to normal and at least 300,000 are dead.
