If you are worried about term and how Markstrom will age, then the best bet for an elite goalie is Kuemper, who has two more years at a good cap hit. But there is an asset cost to acquire and you are playing this goalie carousel game again soon; however, at least the timing fits with the current core and fully establishes the two year win window.

Ideally, the Canucks trade for OEL has Demko as the centrepiece and the Canucks re-sign Markstrom. With Demko in the fold, Arizona is more inclined to just let Kuemper go a little cheaper.

Honestly, I’d be ok with trading a decent asset right now like Mangiapane for Kuemper. I’m not sure the Flames would be able to keep Mangiapane long term anyways. I’m less inclined to trade the 2021 first because that could be a long term asset for the Flames.
