Playing devil’s advocate somewhat here, but is OEL’s value being underrated? His game has dropped off for the past two years or so, but he has also lost his mother during that time period and playing for one of the most dysfunctional organizations in the league for the past decade, at least, has to have had some affect.
Friedman has stated that there are a few hockey executives who think OEL is a prime ‘change of scenery’ candidate. Last high profile ‘change of scenery’ candidate off the top of my head was Ryan O’Rielly. The Flames are getting ripped by quite a few here nowadays because they didn’t acquire ROR.
As far as Hanifin goes, I think he’s topped out or near the top. He’s a good 3-4, but I’m not convinced he’s going to get beyond that. The fact the Flames had him included to their Hall deal and the fact he was bumped altogether from the PP once Gustafsson arrived speaks to where the Flames see him. Expendable.
