I suppose they may still choose to not qualify him and hope he signs a short-term deal for less, but he would be signing as a UFA at that point, so they would have no guarantee that he wouldn't go elsewhere.
It's looking increasingly likely that they will have to bridge Bear, who forced his way onto the top pairing and will be looking for a big raise.
