Bringing families into the mix has traditionally been verboten in American politics. When the Republicans attacked Billy Carter it was thought of in very poor taste. Same when Republicans attacked Chelsea Clinton. Same when they sniffed around the Obama children. You don't get to choose your family, so they have usually been thought of as a sacred cow, so to speak. For Biden it would have opened the door for Trump to attack Hunter, which Trump did and Joe shut down quickly.
