Smith is going to be looking for a 3-5 year deal and currently makes 4.25M which means he's going to be expecting the same if not more. This is the type of contract the Flames simply cant afford.
Use current assets to address this via Trade/Draft etc.
Heck I'd rather give Gawdin a shot at RW and save the 4.25M+ because he's going to slot in as a 3rd/4th liner at best.

I really doubt Smith is going to be seeking more than his current contract. When he signed this deal was was coming off 47 goals and 96 points over the previous two seasons and was just 24, with 4 seasons under his belt. He was expected to continue to develop a little more offensively, but he didn't, he only had 1 more season on par with those years and the rest were slightly lower.
He's an excellent two-way player, who uses linemates effectively. He more 2016 Frolik than Brouwer.
I suspect Craig Smith gets 2-4 years in the 3-3.5m range.
