-49 for a 30 year old over the last three seasons has me thinking he just might be cheating for offence and could be a reason he "out produced"
There is a reason one guy will be getting a much larger contract where ever they end up

The point in bringing up Backlund wasn't the Selke votes, it's the fact we know he is an exceptional defensive player and still had a -21 season.
Being a minus doesn't mean someone is cheating, it could mean the Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators were simply awful teams with terrible goaltending and defense.
That Sens team where he was -20, saw Karlsson at -25 and only 2 regulars finish as + players and ha da team SV% under .900
His first year with Florida 7 regulars were -10 or worse, with just 2 regulars being + players. Their team sv% was again under .900
This season, he was only -5 and the Panthers had a .904 team sv%
but if you want to look at the other seasons of his career, you know the onles you intentionally left out to cherry pick his minus seasons, when he was a +34 player in that time, those teams put up .916, .916 and .926 sv% seasons.
And let's not forget that in those 6 years, Hall is a -19 with just 1 plus season and Hoffman is -15.
+/- is a really terrible stat. Good defensive players can have a poor+/- and a poor defensive player can have a good +/-. Neither Hoffman nor Hall will ever be considered defensive stalwarts, in fact I'd say they are both average at best.
