You can't just look at point totals though. Petry has scored 16, 27, and 21 points at even strength over his last three seasons. Hanifin has scored 22, 23, and 14. So Petry has outscored him at 5 on 5 by 5 points over three seasons. These were Petry's 30-32 years and Hanifin's 21-23 years.
When Petry was 23 he had 35 NHL games under his belt and 5 points.
I won't discredit Petry's power play points entirely, but over the last 3 years he has averaged 2:34 of PP time per game on the top unit compared to Hanifin's 1:23 per game average on the second unit. Their point totals would be much closer (if not in favor of Hanifin) if they were given the same opportunities.
I don't see any team taking Petry over Hanifin (especially not with the price difference now).
Maybe someone smarter than I can breakdown their defensive games to see if there is a significant difference there? Offensively there is no way Petry is worth $1.8 more than Hanifin.
