Flames inked Mark Giordano to a 6 year extension in the summer of 2015 worth $6.75M per at almost the same age. Gio was coming off 48 points in 61 games, Petry is coming off 40 points in 71 games.
This deal isn't out of line. It's a fair deal.
Hanifin to date hasn't shown the offensive ability to be in this ballpark, and I'm not sure Hanifin's age is any sort of guarantee he will begin producing/impacting games to this level. Hanifin's deal is not bad, but to say that this Petry contract makes the Hanifin deal look better is just misguided in my eyes.
